Про меня (About me)

Vladimir Protas - famous Ukrainian sculptor, noted for his works on Greek mythology
and series of portraits of renowned cultural personalities.

The cube is a traditional symbol of the Earth, where the three-dimensional space unfolds into the 4th dimension - time. Traces of the planetary evolution are discovered and researched by geology and paleontology, but in the end eternity erases each trace of history. The top facet of the cube is still clean. Will our civilization be able to leave in eternity the equivalent imprint, adding deeds of humans to the facets of natural kingdoms and elements?
The stone itself, be it marble or travertine, material for sculpture, is a result of this history of our planet – natural history. Being dug out, extracted and taken away from its natural environment, the stone then meets a human hand that gives certain form to it, thus stretching, extending its history and changing it from the domain of nature to that of human beings, people. Consequently, this composition can be perceived and understood as a metaphor of any stone sculpture as such, because the latter is at the same time a material artifact and a process when a human hand leaves its traces, imprints over the stone – part of the history of the Earth, by this very way leading our planet’s history into the future, for there can be no future without art.

ABOUT MY WORK

‘Vladimir Protas is a famous Ukrainian sculptor, whose individual plastic manner synthesizes the style of archaic and classical traditions (with the dominant of renaissance vision), perceived through the "spiritual optics" of modernistic experience of European culture of ХХ cent (most notably Vienna Secession and Art Deco). His artistic work is free of far-fetched rationalism, neither it is influenced by fashionable trends: he is focused on the search for Truth in art and culture, aiming at finding adequate forms of plastic expression of transcendent senses and feelings. The unique thing about the inner psychology of artistic work by Vladimir Protas is that his imperatives (as an artist and a human being) are determined by the inwardly adopted ideas of Plato and Plotinus, Frankfurt School of philosophy and the classics of Ukrainian philosophical thought (Hryhoriy Skovoroda, Pamfil Yurkevich). The aesthetics of the series of historical portraits "Geniuses of European culture of ХIX - ХХ centuries", easel sculpture of mythological cycle and open-air works is focused on the richness and wholeness of embodiment of all times into the spirit and matter of art, on the dialog of the absolute time with the memory of history, on the sense of life as a whole. All these traits bring inexhaustible depth of the universes of Spirit, loftiness of feelings and harmony of self-fulfillment into the plastic symbolism of the artist’s works’ 2010.
